How You Can Be More Productive This Year

With a new year in full effect, it’s easy to stress out about everything that may be coming your way. There are many ways to get stuff done, but here is a list of some tried & true ways to be more productive in the new year:

To-Do List

  1. Make a to-do list
  2. B start to-do list
  3. Put reminder in phone to start to-do list

Use multi-colored flashcards (red, yellow & green)

Red card
At the end of each day get out a red flash card. Anything on the red flashcard has to be done the next day or taken as close to completion as possible.

Yellow card
The yellow flashcard represents things that have to be done in the next 2 to 4 days but cannot be worked on until the red is fully completed or taken as far as possible. Mark the items on the card 1,2,3 for priority with the date added and when they get to that date if they are not done, promote them to the red card.

Green Card
Green are items that have to be done in a week to 10 days. Follow the same procedure listed above for the yellow card but move items from green to yellow.

Calendar

Put items in your calendar and write them in color. This should work for men better than for women since men identify with color before anything. It also helps to keep re-writing them each day.

Reward Yourself

Come up with a reward that you really want, for example a certain drink or doing something you enjoy, and not allowing yourself to do it/have it until you’ve done a certain task.

Work Hard

The trick is to realize that like with any other investment, hard work pays off over time. Try working as hard as you can for 3 months. You should find yourself in a better place at the end of that 3 months.

Schedule Your Time

Not very unique, but use a timer. Setting 30 minutes timers for everything can really change the way you organize your schedule.

Set a short timer and work hard during that time. Even if you can only work for 15 minutes and you don’t finish, you are at least able to get really focused working time in because it is a manageable chunk of time. This is different than when you have all day to do something & don’t get it done because you really don’t want to start.

 

K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid)

Do something simple & easy first thing in the morning. It’ll get you on a productive start for the day.

It may sound childish but make yourself a sticker chart, like you would for a kid. Give yourself stickers for chores, for emptying out my email inbox, for making healthy choices, etc. Every so many stickers I get a reward.

For me, it starts the night before by making a list of things you need to do before going to bed. This will help you wake up with direction.

Force yourself to lay out stuff the night before. Pick out an outfit, pack your bag/lunch and put it by the door. It’s remarkable how pleasant this can make your mornings.

Leave a small light on in the room where the chore needs to get done. Once you knock out the task, the light can go off and mission accomplished.

Just do it.

Get Help

Wear noise canceling headphones. They don’t even need to play music. Just wear them, and people are less likely to bother you.

Download an app that gamifies productivity, habits, and daily tasks.

Use a planner and challenge yourself to see how filled out you can make your week, It can make you feel good in the moment and can be a useful guide for the rest of the week.

Don’t Procrastinate

Every time you think of putting off work, know, that nobody is going to do it for you, and you’re going to have to do it eventually. You can either do it now, when you have the time for it, or when you’re in a crunch, so you might as well do it now.
