You Know Better (So Do Better)!

There is a saying, “If we knew better, we would do better.”

Today I’d like to challenge the validity of this phrase.

Is this statement really true? Most Christians know what they’re supposed to do.

We know that God is against lying, gossiping, pre-marital sex, swearing – yet many still do it any way. (Proverbs 12:17, 1 Peter 4:15, 1 Corinthians 6:18, James 1:26)

If our life was one big job – to some God is like the boss who’s on vacation and all the employees do what they want just because they feel bossman’s not around.

Not only that, we’re aware that the kinda boss we have; he won’t fire us, he may come back from vacation, look around and say, “Oh, ya’ll tore the whole place apart and caused the company to almost go out of business due to lack of sales this week?  That’s okay, I’ll give you grace and you can start all over and get it right the next time.”  Then the boss goes away and comes back again, only to find the same mistakes made and the entire office in a disarray once more.

Just because the boss may forgive you upon his return, doesn’t mean that he’s pleased with the outcome.  He’s not happy to see everything in shambles because of the actions of his employees.  He wants them to be successful and their careers to flourish because He sincerely cares about them but they can’t go to the next level if they continue to disappoint him while he’s away.

Sometimes I think, we, as believers, view God as that boss who’s on vacation in our lives.

We live like God doesn’t see us, we forget about His omniscience and omnipresence -the fact that He sees all and knows all- plus we figure He’ll forgive us any way so we go ahead and party like it’s 1999 not really caring because, “Oh, God understands.”

We know better, but we still go against God’s Word and His will for our lives – we don’t do better.

The Word of God says to Him that knows to do good but doesn’t do it, to him that’s sin.
(James 4:17)

As long as we don’t do better even though we know better we’re sinning against our Heavenly Father.

Thank God that every day is an opportunity to receive new mercies and God’s grace (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Let’s not take God’s grace for granted and maintain a heart to serve and live for Him no matter who we think is watching us.

The Word says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6)

We know the Word, we know what God requires of us, let’s be like Nike and “just do it” so we can receive all of God’s blessings that He intends for our lives.

Let’s know better and do better.

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.  James 4:17
