Do You Pray For YOU?!

As a Christian, I know that prayer is the most important part of the day. That one-on-one time communing with God can really set your day up for success while NOT praying can make you feel like you’re missing something. Even if it’s quick, I always “throw up” a word to God praising Him for another day, asking for His grace & mercy for the day ahead of me and thanking Him for the many blessings that He’s allowed me to have (healthy parents, food to eat, a sane mind, etc.). If I really broke it down, I could have a prayer that lasts all day long – thanking God for every hair on my head, a safe vehicle to drive, a roof over my head, food to eat, my friends & my family, clothes to choose from and on & on. It can be really overwhelming when I think about the goodness of God. Everyone isn’t as fortunate, so I try not to take it lightly the many blessings that I have.

I’m not selfish though – I also pray for my family members, my friends, anyone I know who’s married (because Lord knows they’ll need help), people’s mental health (nothing is right if your mind isn’t right), our leaders (everything from my pastor to the President), the state of this country and even strangers who are facing challenges. It makes no sense to pray for myself & not desire the same for others.

Don’t get me wrong, my prayers aren’t always about thanking God. Naturally, I also request things from God – to meet the right man, to win the lottery (hey, you never know!), to get a promotion, etc. And I know it’s okay to ask for these things. The Bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Phil. 4:6)” This means it’s okay to ask God for any & everything that’s on your heart and if it be in His will, it will come to pass.

With that said, you may be praying for you but are you praying for STUFF or are you really praying for you? Praying for a new car, a new spouse, a new home or new money isn’t what I mean either. Of course, you pray for you in that regard but what else do you ask for?

More importantly than asking for STUFF, is asking for God to prepare you for the stuff you’ve asked for. What good is asking for a better job if you’re not prepared to do the work? Why ask for more money if you can’t balance the budget you have now? And for me, what am I going to do with a good man in my life if I’m not prepared to be a good wife?

I say all this to say, it is just as important to really pray for yourself and not just for STUFF. To get ready for your blessings ask God to prepare you – He wants you to succeed so He won’t let you down.
